In my classroom, I use AI not just as a teaching assistant, but as a tool for sparking conversation about shared global concerns, such as climate change, the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), and sustainability. These are universal topics that provide rich opportunities for intercultural learning, where students can compare perspectives and explore how different communities address the same issues.

For example:

  • I use ChatGPT to co-create dialogues between children from different countries, discussing how they reduce plastic use or celebrate Earth Day in their own culture.
  • With AI-generated visuals, we bring abstract topics to life. We visualize the impact of ocean pollution, forests affected by global warming, and community clean-up efforts across continents.
  • Students engage in guided speaking activities where they take on the roles of eco-heroes from various cultures, working together to solve environmental problems.
  • In one class project, we created a digital storybook with AI support, where each student designed an eco-superhero from a different country. Their characters represented diverse cultures and fought for environmental causes relevant to their region—such as air pollution, endangered animals, or sustainable farming.

These projects allow learners to build their English skills through real-world communication while also developing intercultural awareness and empathy. They begin to see themselves not just as language learners, but as global citizens.

What I’ve learned through this approach is that students become more motivated to speak English when they feel their words have meaning. Talking about recycling or water conservation becomes much more powerful when students compare how it's done in different countries—and when they see themselves as part of a worldwide effort.

Even young learners, who may not yet write in English, are eager to express their ideas, ask questions, and role-play real-life situations. This gives them a voice, and that voice is shaped by both language learning and intercultural understanding.

Using AI to support environmental education in the ELT classroom has opened up exciting possibilities for global dialogue. It’s not just about learning new words—it’s about connecting cultures, encouraging critical thinking, and preparing learners to take action on the issues that matter most. In this way, AI becomes more than a tool—it becomes a bridge between classroom learning and the wider world.
