Spare A Touch of Compassion for Ourselves And Others to Sustain Our Well-Being

Is it selfish to prioritize myself over others to protect my well-being? This article explores that question by discussing the benefits of self-compassion and compassion for others. In doing so, it is hoped that readers – language teachers in particular – can reflect on those practices and sustain their well-being in a more effective way.

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in how teacher attrition is related to teachers’ emotional well-being. The English teaching profession in Mexico is more demanding and challenging than ever due to working and salary conditions, workload, and lack of professional growth opportunities. However, English teachers’ emotional well-being has been neglected, and teachers’ emotions are “invisible” to others, leading to teachers leaving the profession.

Teachers’ well-being is commonly understood to be associated with surface-level self-care; however, teachers’ well-being goes beyond what teachers can do alone. This article explores how psychological safety in educational institutions impacts teachers’ well-being.
