Dear Intercultural Communication members,
I’m excited to bring you a new edition of the Intercultural Communication Interest Section Newsletter! We hope you are enjoying the beginnings of Fall in the Northern Hemisphere and Spring in the Southern Hemisphere. We are experiencing the beginnings of a beautiful crisp Fall here in Florida.
This issue of the ICIS newsletter has some exciting articles! In store for you in this newsletter, we have reflections from our leadership team and announcement of events coming up.
Featured in this issue we have:
- World Englishes as a Medium of Instruction: Insights from a Thai Context: Liezel Pagado Tagarda holds appointments at Northeastern Mindanao State University in the Philippines and NMK School in Bangkok, Thailand and shares her research in using World Englishes to teach content to Thai students.
- Creating Culturally Responsive Classrooms: Art and Technology as Tools for Awareness: Aniqa Shah, a PhD candidate at the University of Arizona, shares her experience teaching beginning level ESL students intercultural competence through hands-on activities and immersive tools.
- Book Review: Melanie Van den Hoven, ICIS member at large, gives a review of the newly published, “Translanguaging and Epistemological Decentering in Higher Education and Research.” This review highlights our profession’s vision of learning from the periphery and transforming our practices by those experiences.
We invite you to join our exciting events coming up! This is a great community to be involved in, and I hope you will join us. On December 11, we are celebrating the December Solstice. Please join us for a Webinar on Critical Language Pedagogy (CLP) and English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) by Dr. Sávio Siqueira to be held on January 14 and lightning talks on February 12. The last webinars and lightning talks were fantastic, so I highly recommend them! You can find our events posted on our social media channels on LinkedIn, Facebook and X.
Another way to connect with ICIS is to submit a piece to the ICIS newsletter. Share your insights or a lesson plan, experiences regarding intercultural learning, teaching intercultural competence or cultural exchange in your educational setting. Please see our Call for Submissions for links to the author guidelines and call. The next deadline is January 29, 2025. Please email your submissions to [email protected].
We know you will enjoy the features in this newsletter. We hope to see many of you in our upcoming events!
