The poor quality of English language teaching and learning has been a central topic of discussions on quality parameters of education in India. I would like to argue that this has to do with the conceptual imbalances inherent to non-critical ELT that rely on fragmentary and skill-based approaches to language. Consequently, we are facing a situation where a single global or centralized teaching-learning English package is projected as what is needed for all learners and teachers across the world. Eventually, market economy has been able to control the academic domain. This, in fact, results in the demolishing of the linguistic and cultural identity of the native speakers of the non-Standard varieties of English. The problem will be much more intense in the case of the native speakers of other languages who are compelled to learn the nuances of Standard English. This, in true sense, is nothing but linguistic imperialism which at any cost needs to be resisted.
Dr. K. N. Anandan did his PGCTE, PGDTE, M. Litt and Ph.D. from CIEFL, Hyderabad. He has worked as a consultant with District Primary Education Programme (DPEP) and, later, with Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), Kerala. Discourse Oriented Pedagogy (DOP), as conceptualized by Anandan, has been instrumental for bringing about a paradigm shift in second language pedagogy in the states of Kerala (vide Kerala Curriculum Frame work (KCF-2007) and AP (prior to bifurcation) and Telangana (vide State Curriculum Framework (SCF- 2011). The theoretical postulates of DOP derive impetus from the insights contained in linguistic theories, SLA theories, and Cognitive psychology. DOP is being practiced in the states of Kerala and Telangana and in select schools of Pondicherry and Mandya, Karnataka.
Anandan has published several papers on second language pedagogy in peer-reviewed journals such as LLT- A Journal on Language and Language Teaching, Fortell – A peer-reviewed journal of Teaching English, and REISI journals. He has authored several books, of which two books on second language pedagogy, namely, Tuition to Intuition (2006) and Freedom from Imperial Shackles (2016), deserve special mention. His book Bhashasastrathile Chomskyan Viplavam ‘The Chomskyan Revolution in Linguistics (written in Malayalam) has won the Kerala Sahithya Academy Endowment Award (2006). Over the past 2 decades, Anandan has conceived several programs that incorporate DOP. These include Second Language Acquisition Programme (SLAP), Rapid Acquisition of Competence in English (RACE), Rapid English Acquisition Programme (REAP), Promoting Acquisition of Competence in English (PACE), Facilitating Acquisition of Competence in English (FACE), Acquiring Competence in English (ACE) and Special Package for Acquiring Competence in English (SPACE) for different government agencies and NGO’s targeting various levels of learners.
At present, Dr. Anandan is working as a freelance English consultant rendering his service to various institutions and organizations.
