SRIS Webinar: Who you are matters! Identity issues in ELT

The growing interest in identity in TESOL context over the last decades, has resulted in a rich body of work that has informed language learning, teaching, and research. This workshop will explore the concept of identity in ELT, highlighting key theoretical underpinnings from a sociocultural perspective of learning. It will also provide useful strategies for integrating identity issues in teaching and learning English.


Malba Barahona is an Associate Professor in the Facultad de Educación at Universidad Católica de Chile, Chile. Her research interests focus on initial English language teacher education, drawing on sociocultural perspectives and cultural historical activity theory. Malba has undertaken research on teacher identity, teachers’ beliefs, practice-based approaches, teachers’ agency, language learning policies and the use of emerging technologies in foreign language learning and teaching. Her work has been published in international journals such as the TESOL Journal, System, Language Teaching Research Journal, among others.
