DESCRIPTION:
In this presentation, the presenter explores common issues of vulnerability, social equity, and double standard that Indigenous multilingual learners face in U.S. schools upon their arrival. After dissecting these issues, the presenter will offer suggestions on how to best support their social-emotional and academic needs inside and outside the classroom. Further, the presenter will provide insights into effective practices to support Indigenous multilingual learners' print literacy (reading and writing) skills.
PRESENTER:
Luis Javier Pentón Herrera, Ph.D. served as the 38th President of Maryland TESOL in 2018-2019. He currently serves as Assistant Professor at the University of Warsaw, Poland, in the Faculty of Modern Languages and The Institute of Applied Linguistics, and as the Coordinator of the Graduate TESOL Certificate at The George Washington University, United States.
