Greetings Everyone,

I am wondering if there are members interested in exploring the topic of ESL Sustainability.

Sustainability is defined here as ways we can consider policy and advocacy toward climate sustainability.

Some topics to consider could be more online conventions and less air travel to fight air pollution.
Another topic could be to advocate for food at conventions to be an alternative to beef products to reduce agricultural emissions.
A third topic could be to take a national and international position that ESL supports sustainability as a mission and be part of climate justice.

I was inspired by Standford University faculty engaging in sustainability.

I am not an expert. I am a community college instructor. I have taught ESL for over a decade at City College of San Francisco. I am hoping there are members out there who may want to make CLIMATE SUSTAINABILITY a part of the ESL mission.

I think the process for getting a TESOL International Position Statement passed may be outlined in the by-laws.

I am not an expert. I am a community college instructor. I have taught ESL for over a decade at City College of San Francisco. I am hoping there are members out there who may want to make CLIMATE SUSTAINABILITY a part of the ESL mission.

I just like to get the conversation going. Perhaps the discussion already exists.

Hi Neela - I work with my graduate students at Auburn University to create ESL lessons around topics of sustainability to teach to a Community English Class as part of my methods courses. I also took a faculty workshop about how to incorporate issues of sustainability into my courses and this seemed like a logical way. I direct my students to the United Nations 17 goals for sustainable development as a springboard for choosing topics of interest.  I'm glad to see Nellie and Nikki's posts adding to our understanding of how TESOL is and can be involved in this important global topic.  I'm interested in joining this TESOL discussion more explicitly. Thanks for broaching the topic.

Sustainability is defined here as ways we can consider policy and advocacy toward climate sustainability.

Some topics to consider could be more online conventions and less air travel to fight air pollution.
Another topic could be to advocate for food at conventions to be an alternative to beef products to reduce agricultural emissions.
A third topic could be to take a national and international position that ESL supports sustainability as a mission and be part of climate justice.

I'd like to share the link to the Google Site focused on English language education for sustainability that I prepared for English language educators in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay. This is a component of virtual professional development that I recently offered as an English Language Specialist through the Regional English Language Office in Lima, Peru--part of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the US Department of State. I will periodically update the site with new resources. In addition to resources, there is a link to a public Padlet that contains "project sketches" prepared by participating English language instructors. I hope you find some of these resources to be useful, and I am eager to learn more from this PLN.

Susan Huss-Lederman and I have been discussing how PBL might be a great option for designing curriculum and catching student's interest.

Hi, Raya--

There are many wonderful resources for K-12 educators available from PBL Works. Many of these high-quality resources are free once you have established an account. I also appreciate the work of educator and PD specialist John Spencer. Both of these sources will provide ideas to work in K-12 contexts. I also recommend that you consider ideas offered by Beckett and Slater (2005) on integrating reflection on language development throughout projects. Beckett and Slater have published quite a bit in this area since then, mostly focused on higher education contexts.

As far as tips go, I think it is important to make sure that topics are relevant and of high interest to learners and that we offer them as much choice as we can in the PBL process, as well as opportunities to reflect on how their English proficiency develops throughout a project. When planning a PBL unit, we need to consider where we, as teachers, might need to directly focus on structural elements of English.

In the schools of the Galapagos Islands (where I conduct ongoing work with another PBL project), K-12 teachers across the disciplines implement several interdisciplinary projects focused on locally identified sustainability topics throughout the academic year. Secondary English language teachers have reported to me that their students enjoy the collaborative process of learning English through PBL. They are proud that they can communicate essential ideas that reflect and build upon what they are learning in core content areas.
