The first time I saw myself as a content creator was years into my profession. I had only used books by authors I admired for their creativity and content. As I moved into Adult ESL I realized the books that previously worked for me did not apply to my new teaching assignment. My audience had shifted and so to the content I would need.

As I tried to engage my students, the need to connect with them was even greater and not all international content hit home. So I started adapting exercises with local content. I used similar exercises to the ones I had always loved and boom it was a hit.

My adult students reacted positively to reading content about their living and working contexts. This ignited my passion for Material Writing.

What ignited your passion for MW?

Have you had a similar experience where the books you are using do not quite captivate your teaching audience? What do you do?
