    Jennifer,
Good to continue "reintroducing" the ESP Interest Section via the video and references
to the resources newsletter, and plans for TESOL 23.

The focus on a joint session with the Applied Linguistics Interest Section  COMBINED
with the Academic Session on doing Needs Analyses is a good combination for reinforcing
how ESP--is needs-driven--and not content driven as some think.

Presentations on how to do/ and the importance of Needs Analyses, is an excellent way
of reinforcing the principles of ESP --at its core are the specific community of learners and
their real, immediate/ near immediate needs.

    Jennifer and all ESP-IS leaders,

I'm so glad you've put this video together! I'm a member of several TESOL groups (although ESP is my "first love"), and I'm surprised how many messages on MyTESOL are "What does X mean?" - and X is usually an acronym or name of a group that potential members don't know about. I think having a video to explain who we are and what we do is big help, and it's something we can refer people to this coming year.

Like Margaret, I'm glad to hear the re-emphasis on needs analysis for the academic session next year. We all need to be reminded of how we decide what to include in our ESP programs. One of the key elements that differentiates us from other types of language teaching is that our choices are not (or shouldn't be) hit or miss, but rather based on the actual needs of our clients and students, as Michael Ennis mentioned in his segment of the video. That said, we can all use new ideas for conducting that needs analysis and those of us who are new often are looking for ways to figure out our learners' needs.

    Jennifer
Thank you for the informative video. I am an ELD instructor at a technical high school where the specific linguistic needs of the student apply directly to their chosen trade. Not only do they need direct instruction and modifications for their academic classes, but their needs also include vocabulary, reading and speaking instruction in their chosen trade.

I think this section will be informative and helpful. If there are other technical school teachers in the section, please feel free to reach out to me.

    Andrea,

I'm so you glad you've responded and told us about your context. For years, the ESP-IS Steering Board included a representative who worked in the field of VESL: Vocational English (ESP) as a second language. We had difficulty finding enough volunteers who worked doing ESP with high school age learners to keep the position filled, but what you are doing is still an important part of the ESP community. It sounds like, in order to teach these students effectively, you have to learn about their needs in the fields that they are training for and then design your language courses based on those needs. That is exactly what ESP is all about, and although Jennifer did not mention VESL or secondary-aged learners in the video, I would argue that if you are basing your courses on analyzed needs in students' targeted professions, you are doing ESP.

Thank you for sharing, Andrea. As Ethel mentioned, what you are doing sounds exactly like ESP and we welcome you into our IS community. I am sure we can learn a lot from your experiences!

I could not agree more, Ethel. I like how you put it - we are not a 'hit or miss' type of program. It is our responsibility to create programs that respond directly to student needs. The first step is, logically, to identify those needs. I'm looking forward to our sessions at TESOL to learn more about how our ESP colleagues are doing just that!

I agree, Margaret! Student needs are indeed the core of ESP!
