MESSAGE FROM AEIS co-CHAIR, YILIN SUN:
TESOL's Adult Education Interest Section (AEIS) is organizing an academic session at the TESOL 2023 Convention in Portland, Oregon, United States. We are looking for English teachers and teacher educators who have designed/integrated innovative asset-based programs in Adult Education. We would like to highlight educators who have created lessons and activities to help adult English learners develop agency, language, workplace, and cultural competencies. We are also looking for teachers to share the innovative work from systemically/historically under-represented students who demonstrated resilience, overcame challenges, and made a difference in their social, academic, work and professional lives. We'd like them to join a panel of ELT practitioners to share their innovative work and the successful stories of their students. The tentative title of the session is Counter-storytelling as a Social Justice Pedagogy. We encourage the panelists to share non-traditional, non-majoritarian narratives, nonlinguistic modes (i.e., digital visuals, powerful stories, arts and poetic modes of expressions from immigrants, refugees, and under-represented students), and asset-based practices to empower students in their language, intercultural, and global community development. Estimated length for each panelist would be about 15-18 minutes. If you are an adult EFL/ESL teacher, teacher educator, or researcher who would like to share your work and your students' stories at this academic session, please send the following information to Yilin at yilsuntesol@gmail.com by Monday 5pm EST, June 20, 2022.
