    Hello all!

Does anyone have recommendations for online doctoral programs in Applied Linguistics, Instructional Technology or Educational Leadership?

    Many thanks,

    Katie

    Hello Katie
Employment-wise, some countries view online quals with suspicion or do not recognise them as valuable (e.g., China), so it is best to do such a qual with a market leader or a university which is in the World Top 800 in Times Higher Rankings.
I would suggest the Open University, Milton Keynes, UK or UNISA, Pretoria, South Africa. I am sure there are a couple of programmes in the US or Canada or Australia but maybe colleagues from those countries can come up with a specific suggestion. Regards.

And one more paragraph from me. The original question was about ONLINE doctoral programmes. Therefore, my understanding is that only purely and exclusively online programmes should be mentioned and recommended to interested candidates internationally. In practice, this means that the candidate would not have to incur travel expenses say from Hanoi to Vancouver or from Harare to Edinburgh on top of tuition fees. If a PhD or EdD programme is offered internationally but involves some in situ participation in the university in a host country, such a programme should I think be termed distance or blended learning. I hope this makes sense. Mark Krzanowski

    Hello,
I am in an all online doctorate of arts in English pedagogy at Murray State University in Kentucky. The price is reasonable, everything is online, and you can choose a specialization (English Language Teaching is one). My electives are in the TESOL department and the core courses are with the cohort you start with and focus on research methods, curriculum design, instructional technology, and assessment.
You are welcome to email me for further thoughts and information or visit the Murray State DA English program. Think hard though if you need a PhD or a doctorate because although a terminal doctorate, it is not a PhD.
    Good luck!

I know of a few because some of my coworkers have been looking and our program has looked into partnerships with various schools. University of Nebraska has an online EdD in Educational Leadership. Oregon State has a mostly online (2 Saturdays/quarter in person in Portland) EdD or PhD in Adult and Higher Education. Michigan State has an online doctoral program in Educational Psychology and Educational Technology.
I'm sure there are more but those are the ones I know of off hand.

Hi!  Cornerstone University has a doctorate of education in organizational leadership. It's interdisciplinary, adaptable to focus on your area of interest.  Here's a link if you'd like to check it out!

I am enrolled in a online EdD at UF (Curriculum & Instruction, Educational Technology).  I have classmates in my cohort (https://education.ufl.edu/coe-online/programs/) embedded in professional contexts all over the world.  Some are teachers, professors, and instructional designers.  Currently, the tuition is in-state for all. Currently, there are scholarships from the College of Education, but I don't know the requirements or how many are available.  Several on-campus sessions are required, and I believe you have to be on campus to defend Qualifying Exams, and definitely to defend the dissertation. The EdD is equally rigorous as the PhD, and the research can be directed to any field of expertise.  If you have questions about it, let me know.

My professors wrote the book, literally, on online doctorates:  http://www.aupress.ca/index.php/books/120272  Free pdf download on this page.

    Here are a couple more:

Not focused on applied linguistics, but with a very good Ed Tech focus, is one through the College of Education at the University of Hawaii Manoa. This program requires a few weekends on campus but otherwise is taught online: https://coe.hawaii.edu/academics/learning-design-technology/phd-ltec

I also met a professor last semester from the University of Queensland who said their PhD in Applied Linguistics was entirely online, but I can't find information about the program from the university website. You could probably email someone there if you are interested.

    Hi all,

Betsy said she " met a professor last semester from the University of Queensland who said their PhD in Applied Linguistics was entirely online, but I can't find information about the program from the university website. "

That professor would be Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jeong Bae Son, whose contact details can be found on Google, but to help you out, here they are

    best,

Thanks, Vance! I was looking at the wrong university, too--Dr. Son is at University of Southern Queensland.

Here's the general program information: https://www.usq.edu.au/study/degrees/education/applied-linguistics-and-tesol

I would recommend emailing Dr. Son directly to ask about the details of the online PhD, since even with the right university website, I can't figure out much about the degree requirements. But he assured me that their program is very strong, internationally recognized and accredited, and doesn't require students to come to campus at all (making it truly an online degree).

UMass Boston has an online Applied Linguistics program; I know they have a doctoral program; I don't know if the doctorate can be done online (I know that the MA can be done online).

    Hi,
I would highly recommend the Doctor of Educational Technology degree through Central Michigan University.  This degree is completely online and is taught in a cohort model.  Students are from all over the world and in many different areas related to educational technology.  I was able to focus on ed tech and English language learners at the university level throughout the program and for my dissertation.  Faculty in the program publish in journals and their own books, so they are leaders in the field and very active in research and presenting at national and international conferences.

One thing I want to stress about this program is that even though it is online, courses are held synchronously so that you do talk and work with other people in the cohort.  Group work is part of many of the courses so that students are not alone when completing this degree.  There is also an active Facebook group where members of all cohorts share ideas, links, and successes, too.  Plus, all cohorts meet informally once a month through an online platform to support each other, and the cohort I was a part of meets twice a month to continue to support each other even though a majority of us have completed our doctorate degrees.

If you have questions, please feel free to contact me!
