TESOL connections in Newcastle, Australia

    Greetings from Newcastle, Australia!

In January of this year, I began the TESOL Core Certificate Program. I was living in Arlington, Texas at the time. I completed all parts of the coursework as well as 10 hours of classroom observation before moving with my family to Newcastle, Australia for my husband's work. We are thrilled to be in this beautiful place on Earth, and feel fortunate that our three daughters are having a chance to experience a bit more of this big old world.

The only downside to this move is that with all the preparations to pull off our international move, I ran out of time to complete those last ten hours of supervised teaching needed to fulfill the requirements of the Core Certificate Program. I would welcome the chance to connect with any colleagues you may have working in the Hunter NSW region who might be able to point me in a good direction to build some networks that might enable me do this.

I have a MA in English with an emphasis in the teaching of composition from California State University, Fresno. I am bilingual English/Spanish, and homeschooled my three daughters for several years before completing the TESOL coursework. I would love to make some connections in the field of TESOL locally. Any help you could lend would be greatly appreciated!

    Welcome to Australia Karla :)
I don't have a direct contact in Newcastle for you, but the Australian Council of TESOL Associations (ACTA) is TESOLs affiliate in Australia. ACTA in turn has member associations in each Australian state and territory. In New South Wales the Association is ATESOL NSW. Their website is here
    https://atesolnsw.bigcartel.com/about
They also have a Facebook page that you could look into.

ACTA has its big biennial conference in October in Adelaide. I'm not sure if you are settled enough to travel yet, but it would be a great way to familiarise yourself with the whole TESOL scene in Australia. It's a friendly conference :)
You can find the information on ACTA's website,, as well as a lot of other info!
    http://www.tesol.org.au

Hope you have a wonderful stay in Australia, and find a way to utilise your TESOL expertise
    best wishes
    Misty

    Hi Karla,

I'd call the Department of Education in your immediate area and explain your needs.  I'm sure they can point you in the right direction to help fulfill the remaining unmet hours for your program study requirement-just be sure the school in Texas is in agreement with you for validation.  Enjoy Newcastle, Australia.
