Dear TESOL colleagues,

I hope you had a great TESOL experience! Thank you so much to those of you who were able to come to the networking session for Supporting Students with Disabilities group. Attached please find the notes that I cleaned up with help from Emily (thank you!). If you would like to add your thoughts on it, please feel free to add comments on the google doc version here:

I also wanted to share that I started adding more resources including the slides for the presentations we did at TESOL on related topic (Library - TESOL2018). Please feel free to add yours!

Again, thank you for your interest and support! We will update you as we learn more. I look forward to working with you on this adventure!

Sincerely,

Dear Valentina, Solange, Kellie, Rachel, and others who are interested in learning more about or helping with the creation of the new TESOL IS on Supporting Students with Disabilities,

I am very excited to *virtually* meet you all! Solange, I heard great things about your presentation that I unfortunately missed, and am grateful that you shared your ppt with the entire group.

If you haven't, would you please consider joining the TESOL eGroup on Supporting Students with Disabilities? You can join this group by following this path: TESOL homepage - Connect to MyTESOL - Communities - eGroups - Supporting Students with Disabilities. We are planning to communicate about the resources and the creation of the IS through the eGroup email list.

Again, thank you for your interest and support! I look forward to having great conversations with you!

Sincerely,

Maiko

Solange,

I would love to access your slides, but am not sure where to look on the TESOL page.  Could you provide a link?

Thank you

I would love to be a part of this group as well.

This has been a hot topic in my district this school year...how do we identify and then support our ELLs with disabilities

We are in the infancy of learning how to handle this and I feel that this group would be a great resource for my team and I.

Best Wishes!

I was unable to attend the initial planning meeting, but I'm very interested in becoming a part of the group. I developed and have been teaching for the past 4 years a course entitled, Issues in Bilingual in Special Education for Inclusive Classrooms. My name is Rachel Grant. I am Associate Professor in TESOL and Literacy Education and serve as TESOL Program Coordinator at CUNY-College of Staten Island.

Hi all,

I, too, would like to be a part of this discussion and group. I am the ELL Coordinator at a high school in Honolulu, and this is a topic that a colleague and I have taken on over the past three years. We have been trying to get our state more involved and aware of the need to address the "whole" student.

I am also very interested in this discussion.  I manage the curriculum for the IEP and Pathway Programs at Temple University.  This is a topic that comes up from time to time among our instructors and with Temple faculty. Please add me to the group!

Hello Lorraine!

Were you able to join the TESOL eGroup? If not, here's how you can join: (TESOL - Connect to MyTESOL - Communities - eGroups - Supporting Students with Disabilities) - Unfortunately, I can't "add" people (if I could, I would be tempted to add all the TESOL members!).

Thank you so much, and I look forward to connecting with you through the eGroup!

I am also interested in this topic! We began using Dr. Catherine Collier's process to determine if a student has a disability or an ELL issue in 2008 in our school district. It has been very helpful in our process. We have over 24,000 students in our school district, over 2,000 are identified as ELL. We are a refugee resettlement site so have over 90 languages in our school district. This is an important topic in the K-12 world!

Maiko,
I would like to join this eGroup but I'm not sure how to do so.  I can find and view it, but I don't see a mechanism to become a member. Is that something I have to do in my main TESOL account?

Hello Maiko,

I have tried to join the e-group and have not been successful.  I followed the steps you suggested, but there was no function where I could actually join the group.  Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Solange

Solange,
To update your egroups and Interest sections, select 'your profile' from the drop down in the upper right hand corner where your picture is. Once there, select on the left, the little pencil next to contact details. This will open a new window and take you to your full profile. Select the 'My interest Sections & Groups Tab' You will find the egroups on the bottom. Select your egroup, then select save. Close the window, and go back to your myTESOL page. I would then logout and log back in. You should then have access to the group. It may take a few minutes for it show up.

Hi Solange,

Michelle Kim has helped us figure it out: It is actually through the TESOL Member Profile page that you join, not through the eGroup page. Here's what she told another TESOL member who was having trouble joining:

"To join this group, please be sure to go to your TESOL Member Profile, click the "Interest Sections & eGroups" tab at the top, check off "Supporting Students With Disabilities" under eGroups, then click "Save." If you have any other questions, please feel free to let me know. Thank you!"

If this doesn't help, please do contact Michelle Kim via TESOL message (My Account – Inbox). Again, thank you for your patience!
