Dear Tabinda, Nikki, and All ~
Hello,
Tabinda, from your neighbor in New York State! I'm pleased to meet you. I worked in adult ed in a community/cultural center for many years. Now I'm an educational writer.
And,
Nikki, thank you for reminding us about the importance of teaching morphology to our students. In September 2021, the
Reading and Vocabulary Interest Section (RVIS) hosted a webinar as follows:
MORPHEMIC AWARENESS AS AN EQUITY ISSUE: HOW EXPLICIT INSTRUCTION IN MORPHOLOGY CAN SUPPORT LITERACY FOR ALL STUDENTS
There is a growing body of research that indicates that explicit attention to morphology leads to wider vocabularies and stronger reading comprehension. In this workshop, we will explore the research, engage in discussion, and participate in simulations that highlight the equity issues behind access to morphology instruction.
Presenter:
Michelle Benegas, Ph.D., is an assistant professor of Second Language Teaching and Learning for Hamline's School of Education and principal investigator on the ELM (English Learners in the Mainstream) Project, a $1.5-million teacher professional development initiative through the US Department of Education.

Those are beautiful! I was also thinking about the word "terrarium" and how students could learn about word roots and morphology when they learn this new vocabulary word.

)Thanks Nikki for noticing my hobbies!
Yes, I have used them in my classes not the salads though :) I did a lesson on how to create open and closed terrariums. Students enjoyed designing their own terrariums and then they observed the growth throughout the school year. It was fun! Also, students love hands-on projects.

Hello Tabinda:
I love that you shared some pictures of your hobbies (flower arranging and "salad arranging") on your profile! Have you been able to incorporate any of these hobbies into your classes with secondary or adult students? I am sure they would make for great experiential lessons.
Best wishes,
