    Hi Everyone,
I have a Bachelor's degree in Math and Computers and I am thinking about getting a TESOL Certification. I have been volunteering as an ESL Teacher for the past 3 years and I really enjoy it. My plan is to continue to volunteer but to start teaching private classes online in the future.

Is anyone familiar with any of these certificates?
    TESOL Certificate
Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)
    Online TESOL Programs
    Programs

I am having a hard time choosing which certificate I should get.
    Any advice is welcome !
    Thanks
    Elaine

    Hello Elaine,

My name is Mariana Menchola-Blanco and I the Teacher Training Coordinator at the Center for English as a Second Language (CESL), University of Arizona.

We offer the TEFL/TESOL Certificates courses you referred to in your posting and I'd be more than happy to talk with you about our offerings and curriculum to see if this is what you are looking for. We have in-service teachers as well as people with no teaching background interested in teaching abroad taking our courses.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

    Elaine,
I have had several of our TEFL interns at University of California, Irvine in my ESL classes over the years.  What  a great experience it has been for all of them.  Most recently of course my intern was with my class over Zoom.   For more in depth discussion or questions about our Certificate program (other than what is alredy online) I encourage  you to contact Roger (rdupuy@uci.edu).    You may also wish to check the website  dce.uci.edu    look for events to see upcoming TEFL and ESL online webinars.   If you click the on-demand tabs and international programs, you will see a few that have been presented and recorded.  This may give you a feeling for our programs.

    Hi Karen
I attended an ESL webinar online and met Rachel Fernandez! She taught an amazing class ;)
Thanks for letting me know about the on-demand tabs, I will check that out.

The UCI TESOL looks like a great program.

    Your reply was super helpful!
    Thanks again,

    Ellaine,
I am so happy you were able to attend one of our TEFL webinars with Rachel.   Please do check out the other  'on demand' webinars; there are  a some TEFL ones and some ESL ones for those studying English.

Hello Elaine, the type of certificate you will need will be probably determined by your place of employment. I teach English for VIPKID, they accepted my ESL Texas teacher certificate. They do offer training for TEFL certification which is what they require to teach Chinese kids. I suggest looking through the websites of your potential employers and see what they require.

    Hello Elaine,

My MA in TESOL is from the University of Arizona, and I was very happy with the program. However, I attended the program a long time ago, so I'm not sure who the faculty are or what the program is like now.

It looks as if you are interested in programs in the Southwest or on the West Coast. If you have any interest in Asia and the Pacific you might want to consider the certificate program at Hawaii Pacific University. https://www.hpu.edu/cla/english-linguistics/cert-tesol.html  I used to teach in the ESL and TESOL programs there. There are opportunities for part-time teaching and volunteering while studying. The main drawback is the cost of living in Hawaii.

Good luck to you in making your decision!

    Hi Elaine,

I am not familiar with those specific programs, but agree with another poster that you want to consider who your future employers might be and what qualifications they require.

If you choose to take a series of courses for a certificate issued by a university, also consider if there's a chance you might want to earn a Master's in TESOL in the future. If so, choose a program in which the certificate courses would count towards your Master's degree at that school. Also check on how much time would be allowed between earning a certificate and starting/finishing the Master's degree.

If your future employers would want you to specifically have the CELTA (Cambridge), this website tells you about taking that program online or at different sites in the United States and elsewhere (depending on pandemic recovery, of course).

    https://www.cambridgeenglish.org/teaching-english/teaching-qualifications/celta/ways-to-take-celta/

    All the best,

    Rene

    Hi Rene,

You gave me a lot to think about. I met a CELTA trainee online a couple of weeks ago,  and we talked a lot about the CELTA Certification.
I plan on continuing to volunteer after getting my certificate but if I was to get a job, I would love to work for a non-profit organization.

    Thanks for your reply,
    Elaine

Allow me to join this informative discussion.

Thanks for this valuable information shared so far.

I am also thinking of taking a TESOL Master's program and happy to explore what is available both online and offline.

    Thank you all
