    DESCRIPTION:
    Correct grammar is important for academic prose, but research shows the traditional skills-based approach to teaching grammar is not effective. Instead, an approach based on close reading and sentence modeling enables student writers to develop sophisticated sentences, use punctuation effectively, and follow the conventions of standard English with minimal grammar instruction and maximum fun. This approach was developed for college students but can easily be adapted for students at all grade levels.

    PRESENTER:

    Alison Kuehner has an undergraduate degree in English literature from the University of California, Berkeley, and a master's degree in literature from the University of Chicago. She also earned an English credential through the Graduate School of Education at the University of California, Berkeley, and a master's in reading instruction at Cal State East Bay.

    Although she enjoyed her time teaching middle school and high school students, Professor Kuehner is most inspired and energized by the diversity and potential of community college students. She has taught a range of courses at Ohlone College in Fremont, California, for thirty years, including literature and composition courses, developmental and reading and writing classes, and online, hybrid, and traditional classes. She has published in professional journals, including Journal of Developmental Education, Journal of Adolescent & Adult Literacy, Journal of College Reading and Learning. She participates in professional activities by presenting at conferences, including the National Association of Developmental Education, California's Strengthening Student Success Conference and the Community College League for Innovation Conference, and by her service as the Northern California Community College Reading Association Co-President and as a California Acceleration Project Leader. In spring 2022, her textbook, Writing to Read, Reading to Write, published by McGraw-Hill, will be going into a second edition.
