    Hello TESOL Colleagues,
One of my teacher friend who teaches 11th grade English literature struggles to engage her ELs (with different English proficiency levels) in class. I introduced her the SIOP model and Culturally responsive teaching model, etc.. I'd like to ask if you have any specific suggestions for her to teach the English literature class (in addition to TESOL Resource center). She is looking for resources to help ELs in her class.
         Thank you SO MUCH!

    Best,
    Chang

    Hello Chang Pu,

Has your friend considered using Graded Readers? These often come with a combination of learning exercises and may also include language development exercises as well, which will allow students of disparate levels to come together using the same materials? There are also teacher resources which your friend could modify as necessary for class concerns.

    A few options:

    Pearson English Graded Readers

    Penguin Random House English Readers

    Oxford Graded Readers

    MacMillan English Readers

The British Council also offers this handy guideline on using graded readers:

    Using Graded Readers

These might be helpful tools to use with the methods you've mentioned.

    Cheers,
    Rob

    Dear Chang,

Could you provide us with some more information. Is this a U.S. based school with proficient American students mixed with ELs? And is the teacher using a common core state standard?

English literature is learned mainly by reading, assessing comprehension and discussion. Can you give an example of a specific problem? Different proficiency levels can be a problem if the material is too difficult for the students.

    Thanks for any information.

I'm not sure if the students are advanced enough but I have recently published an open textbook that uses Greek mythology to teach ESL students. Provided they are advanced and mature enough I'd be honored if someone used it for class.

Please email me if you have any questions about using it.
