PhD, EdD, or simply a bad idea?

    Dear all,

I have an MA in TESOL and am interested in developing a program of study that meets the needs of foreign diplomats and military personnel. I'm debating the merits of pursuing doctoral studies in instructional design or applied linguistics to build experience in program development, evaluation, and curriculum design for ESP. I'm not interested in becoming a researcher, and I accept that tenure no longer exists in the humanities by and large. I'm solely interested in applied research. Is there merit in obtaining either a PhD or EdD given the scope of my venture? As a follow up, are there any online programs in instructional design or applied linguistics that are worth much? I very much appreciate the support from this community and value your input.

    Best,

    Mike
