Hello from the UK

  • 1.  Hello from the UK

    Hello Everyone,

I've been a member for a couple of months but just starting to get to know the site and most importantly filling in my profile.

I teach Business English and specialise is spoken skills and pronunciation live online. I taught many different nationalities over the globe, and have supported second language learners face-to-face in the UK.

I have recently achieved a Master's degree which looks at the pedagogical use of technology within teaching. I focused my studies on second language learning and applied linguistics.  As Covid-19 has forced many people to increase their use of the internet for learning and for work,  time should be invested by educators to make the learning experience more engaging and more empowering.

I would really like to hear from anyone who also works in this area and would like to exchange experiences.  You can also contact me for advice if you are just getting started.

    Hello Everyone
I am so happy to be a part of TESOL as I am  getting to know new friends from different places of the World. Thank you all for sharing your experiences.
Lynne thank you for sharing your teaching practices. We also follow the same in my college in Hyderabad, India.
Leila has given a good description  about PBL.
Now-a-days, teaching online has become a great challenge because we cannot see all the students at a time. So striving hard to cope with the technology.

Its my pleasure to see you In TESOL platform. I am too focusing my studies son linguistics these days. Hope I can enhance my learning and career by sharing our experience in the field of linguistics. Further, do you teach spoken skills via online? Thank you for asking that at question Shakira,

Yes, I do teach speaking skills online. Some of the challenges I face are trying to get my adult learners to engage in role-play, even when the role-play is based on situations they face at work. The other is practice with pronunciation. I have this viewpoint that speaking good English is not trying to speak it like a native. Speaking good English is making sure that the person you talk to, can understand the message or information you are telling them.

Another challenge with speech is getting students just to do a few minutes practise outside of the session.  Listening to and repeating words from a phone app is a good start, but it doesn't substitute the usefulness of having a real-time conversation. It can be a problem for many of my students to find the time to practice and also have someone at home or at work who they can practice with.

Hello Mrs. Thompson. It's great to find you here. I'm Alex from Indonesia, an English teacher-lecturer.  Having English class in my country is currently challenging in many areas due to geographical and infrastructure constraints. Our education practitioners are facing hard time to implement best custom of virtual learning. As for me who's currently staying in the major city, it's quite adaptive. I would be so happy to talk with you if there's any chance for collaboration in my teaching, project, research or anything possible as long as it's virtual. I see a lot of opportunities we all teachers around the globe can do together these days. Looking forward to hearing from you.
