    Hello TESOL Colleagues,
One of my teacher friend who teaches 11th grade English literature struggles to engage her ELs (with different English proficiency levels) in class. I introduced her the SIOP and Culturally responsive teaching models, etc.. Any specific suggestions for her to teach the English literature class?  Thank you SO MUCH!

It is important that teachers who teach secondary students remember the concept of BICS and CALP.  Research has shown that it takes 5-7 years to develop CALP and this is specifically problematic with secondary students because the level of English in texts is so much higher and more academic. It is important that teachers note the ELP level of their students if they want them to be successful. For example, with WIDA a Level 3 (of 5 levels) secondary student is able to Process explanations by Recognizing
relationships in a series of oral statements whereas a student at Level 5 is able to Process explanations by Recognizing specific
language used to enhance clarity and precision. These levels reflect considerably different skills/abilities.  In Level 3,  the fact that oral statements must be presented in a series, represents a need for comprehension. I had used an adapted text to teach the battle of Troy.  It had maps and pictures and additional graphics and was written at a 6th grade level.  The ELL students understood setting, plot, conflict because they could devote their learning to the materials rather than sitting with a bilingual dictionary translating every word of text.  It was wonderful to hear them participate in discussions! This, in turn, made them more confident and involved in active learning.

I'm not sure if the students are advanced enough but I have recently published an open textbook that uses Greek mythology to teach ESL students. Provided they are advanced and mature enough I'd be honored if someone used it for class. (I also have the battle of Troy in my book! Cool.)

Please email me if you have any questions about using it.

    Hello Chang
One thought that comes to mind is to use lit circles.  There is a nice video on the teaching channel that describes it's use with 11th-grade students.  There are many, many resources out there that go into depth about using lit circles with ELLs in classrooms.  I also recommend looking at the work of Tan Huynh--have your friend do a search in his blog about teaching literature.  Also, Larry Ferlazzo has many ideas and links to pursue on this, and other aspects of working with EL students.
Here are some links--they are sources I turn to when I have a question about something in my classroom.
