Introducing Myself

    Hello,

My name is Amirah. I'm a new TESOL member! I got an email saying that I should introduce myself to the myTESOL Lounge. So here I go! I received my TESOL certificate in the summer of 2017 at Hampshire College. After that, I immediately joined the Northern New England TESOL (NNETESOL) Board as their Co-Webmaster where I mainly manage their website, blog, email, and any online material. Also, I began one-one tutoring and adult ESL student at the local library near my college for two years. I graduated from Hampshire College mainly focusing on Education in general and some creative writing. After I graduated, I taught at a summer camp for ESL students in that were preteen-teen. I decided to go back to school and learn more about Graphic Design and thought that would be a useful skill especially for creating content for NNETESOL. I am currently not teaching formally, but I have been starting to help my siblings who came from Egypt in 2019 with their English skills.

If anyone has advice on where I can find more resources when it comes to teaching 12-13 year old ESL students who are high beginning/low intermediate level, that would be very helpful as I'm still fairly new to this field of work. Anyways, I hope everyone has had nice start to the new year!

    Hi, Amirah,

Welcome to TESOL and you certainly are a multi-talented educator! You might like to join the English as a Foreign Language Interest Section, one of the Communities of Practice. This IS attracts teachers in the K-12 range as well as those in Intensive English Programs or Bridge Programs for pre-university students. Also, with your creative bent and interest in creative writing and graphic design, you might like the Art and Creativity PLN, which is the second Community of Practice. You could also find ideas for teaching English to your siblings, newly arrived from Egypt. Drop down the link under "Communities" in the upper left-hand corner of the TESOL website to find the links.

    And again welcome to TESOL!

    Cheers, Jane

Greetings Amirah! Thank you for your introduction and welcome to TESOL!

You might want to check out the TESOL Resource Center to look for ideas for your siblings. You can select the type of resource (maybe activities?) and then "Show more options" and delimit your audience and audience language proficiency.

    https://www.tesol.org/connect/tesol-resource-center

I hope this helps and let us know if you find anything useful!
