What is the general umbrella of teaching speaking?

  • 1.  What is the general umbrella of teaching speaking?

    Greetings fellow TESOL members

I am currently researching teachers' performance when teaching speaking, and I came across this question which I'm hoping you can contribute to answering it. Teachers are usually concerned with accents, fluency, and accuracy when teaching speaking, so what would be the broader area (pedagogy) that 'teaching speaking' fall under?

    Kind regards
    Muna

This is a very broad question, so I'm sure you'll get a variety of answers. I am currently teaching at an elementary school in the USA, and where I teach, we use the Wida ACCESS annual test of English proficiency. Wida also created rubrics for teachers to use when assessing speaking and writing. So, in my state, the focus for speaking is on communicating meaning in a social and academic setting. We focus on their speaking within 3 areas: linguistic complexity of the English they are producing, vocabulary (general, specific and technical) and language control (conventions, grammar, "understandability").

Comprehension of the phonetic system followed by Production of the system, and then move on to Competence, which will lead to Performance (= Linguistic Knowledge).

    Hello Nicola,

This an interesting context to teach in.
Not sure what 'language control' includes, but besides 'vocab' and 'sentence complexity', the other areas generally part of the assessment umbrella are 'fluency & coherence' and 'Pronunciation'. The former assesses 'fluency', without language-related pauses (content-related ones are admissible), while the latter essentially measures comprehensibility (and the effect of 'accent').
'Error-density' in vocab and grammar is usually factored in. At the lower level, you might accept 'accuracy' but at higher levels, one tends to look for 'precision'.
    Hope this helps.
    Hari

This is a very broad question.  I will not attempt to answer it directly, but would highly recommend referring to the following book by Nation, I.S.P. & Newton, J. (2009). Teaching ESL/EFL Listening and Speaking.

Paul Nation's free PDF book entitled What Every ESL Teacher Should Know is also an excellent resource.  See attached.

I would say that "speaking" is itself the umbrella over an array of other subskills,  pronunciation (intelligibility, accuracy...) being <g class="gr_ gr_208 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace" id="208" data-gr-id="208">only  one</g> of them. If there is an umbrella over speaking, it would be  Communicative Competence (Canale & Swain, 1980).
