Hello, I'm Luciana and I'm a Psychologist, currently working as an English Teacher and PhD researcher.
I'm from Rio de Janeiro but I live in Florianópolis, capital of Santa Catarina, a State in the south of Brazil.
It's my first time as a TESOL member and after the amazing convention I'm thrilled to explore this platform and develop my skills.

Welcome to our TESOL community, Luciana!  I see from your profile that you have a background in the arts.  Do you incorporate the arts into your language teaching?  If so, I'd love to hear some examples of arts activities you use in the classroom.

    Hi Nikki,

Well, that's a long story, but to summarize: I no longer work as a clinical Psychologist. 10 years ago I decided to change career and became a makeup artist and hair stylist. Working in this industry I focused on film and character development, so that I could connect my Psychology background with the new career path. After a few years I had to pause my activities to dedicate myself to my PhD and also I decided to return to the classroom environment. My classes try to connect most of these areas: I created conversation programs based on movies, where there is a topic, a movie to watch before class, and a discussion based on the elements displayed. The classes try to help people with traumas related to their learning processes, that interfere in their abilities to speak properly and engage in conversations.

    Thanks for asking. Regards,

    Luciana Medeiros

    Hi Luciana -
Wow.  A very interesting background.  So glad to you have joined TESOL.  I spent four years in Brazil some time ago and remember there is a very active ELT network. I remember fondly a number of trips to Florianopolis - saudade demais!  :-)  BRAZ-TESOL is an affiliate of TESOL International and you may find some good connections there as well. Meanwhile -  explore the TESOL International Interest Sections and Professional learning networks under "Connect to TESOL" at the top of the TESOL home page.
