  • 1.  TOEFL vs IELTS for US university admission

A friend who is advising a student in the Middle East asks whether either the TOEFL or IELTS might be more likely to result in admission to universities in the U.S.

At the time of my retirement in 2013, my answer would have been that there would not be a difference, that U.S. universities tend to accept either test. Do you think this is applicable to U.S. university admissions in the last couple of years?

I have suggested that my friend encourage her student to take the test that is more easily accessible to him, the IELTS.  But if the student already has a list of particular institutions in mind, he could look at the admissions requirements for those particular institutions to see which test(s) they prefer or require, and also what their cut-off scores are.

Am I off base? I appreciate any information and insights you can share.

    Thank you.

Good question... according to IELTS.org (run by the IELTS group):

"Did you know 99% of American 4-year colleges and universities that enroll more than 1,000 international students accept IELTS as proof of English proficiency for their international applicants?"

    https://www.ielts.org/usa

So definitely advise the student to take whichever exam is either more convenient or more appropriate for the student's testing style.

    Best wishes,

To add to Charles' advice, there's the IELTS USA website that will tell you if the entity accepts IELTS https://www.ielts.org/about-ielts/who-accepts-ielts-scores

I also have a very good friend that works there, if you need anything specific drop me a message here.

Check with the University first. University entrance requirements state which exam results they accept.
Ideally they should choose the university and major with time to save extra cost and frustration.

    Hi
To add more to this interesting vs, I'd add now, Duolingo, since many universitites are accepting more and more. The Price and the speed of receiving your answers are getting more customers tan ever, so becareful Toefl and Ielts. There's no doubt of the quality of these two exams, contrasting to Duolingo
    Just to bear in mind
