A friend who is advising a student in the Middle East asks whether either the TOEFL or IELTS might be more likely to result in admission to universities in the U.S.
At the time of my retirement in 2013, my answer would have been that there would not be a difference, that U.S. universities tend to accept either test. Do you think this is applicable to U.S. university admissions in the last couple of years?
I have suggested that my friend encourage her student to take the test that is more easily accessible to him, the IELTS. But if the student already has a list of particular institutions in mind, he could look at the admissions requirements for those particular institutions to see which test(s) they prefer or require, and also what their cut-off scores are.
Am I off base? I appreciate any information and insights you can share.
Thank you.
