MA in TESOL and public credentials vs CELTA or DELTA

  • 1.  MA in TESOL and public credentials vs CELTA or DELTA

Hello. I am a retired ESL/ELD public school teacher. I taught for 33 years in California public schools. I hold a MA in TESOL from CSULA. I am credentialed with a supplementary authorization in ESL with a base credential in music education. The licensing is with the California Commission on Teacher Credentials.
I am thinking of coming out of retirement and teaching English in Mexico, Spain or in other countries in Latin America.
Question: With this background, would a CELTA or DELTA be redundant? In short, is the CELTA irrelevant in my case?

    Hi, Jaime,

This is a great question - so many TESOLers are re-tooling and considering opportunities in their semi-retirement.  I would think that your research in finding a position might include checking out programs' "minimal" and "preferred" requirements for the positions for which they are hiring.  You may get some responses here from TESOL community members who live in those areas or know those programs to which you plan to apply.  That said, it's always good to update one's skills and knowledge.  The certificate programs you mentioned are among those I've personally heard of as being good quality.

Warm wishes for your next chapter!  Sounds exciting!

A CELTA or DELTA is irrelevant because of your MA TESOL and supplementary authorization to teach ESL (not to mention your experience). Just apply for the jobs you're interested in.
