Duolingo for Admissions

Our community college system is trying to determine the appropriate Duolingo score for students to be accepted into our ESOL program. It's easy to find information for scores for admission for regular college courses, but not for ESOL programs. If your institution accepts Duolingo scores for ESOL, what is the minimum score you accept? And how would you characterize your lowest level class that students can take? (We don't take true beginners in our program, so a score of zero is not appropriate for us. For a point of reference, an Accuplacer 46 places students in Level 1 of our program.)

    Thanks so much,

    Hi, Amy,
Your post re community colleges use of Duolingo  scores for admission to your ESOL program caught my attention.  I teach in the academic ESL department and the university developed its own writing assessment so my college is not using Duolingo, but  I personally have been using Duolingo to study Chinese and have recently become aware that a number of schools, like yours, are using Duolingo assessments of language proficiency.  I'd be very interested in learning more about the process in selecting Duolingo and any insights that you might be able to share.
I will also follow this thread to see if other schools respond :)

    Hi Amy!

I'm at an academic IEP in Philadelphia, but we have recently been getting lots of applicants whose goals and needs are more ESOL-like than EAP-like. This is only a rough estimate, but the students we're getting who would probably have been placed into a beginner ESOL class are scoring in the 40 to 50 range on the Duolingo English Test. Hope this helps!
