    Greetings fellow TESOLers,

On behalf of the Faith in English teaching (Faith in ELT) PLN, I am happy to share a bit about our purpose and activities.

    PURPOSE:

The purpose of the Faith in English Language Teaching Professional Learning Network (PLN) is to provide a platform where members can explore the role of personal faith in ELT. Canagarajah (2009) noted that "social and philosophical trends have led to a point when … the spiritual cannot be kept out of the mainstream. Also, we live in a time when the personal finds a legitimate place in the academy" (p. 15). Accordingly, in this PLN, participants from different faith backgrounds consider how their faith influences their teacher identities and pedagogical practices, and learn from each other's diverse perspectives. For that large segment of the TESOL community who are also members of various faith communities, faith is an essential element of personal identity, and hence of teacher identity. This PLN thus supports TESOL's mission to advance professional development through supporting integrated teacher identity. It also supports the strategic objective to expand the variety of professional learning opportunities.

    AFFILIATION:

Many involved in the Faith in ELT PLN are also involved in the Christian English Language Educators Association (CELEA), an organization more focused on the intersection of the Christian faith in ELT. However, the Faith in ELT PLN encourages perspectives and insights from all faiths, knowing that our multiple identities and faith journeys provide rich and unique contexts for language teaching and learning.

    CONTACTS:

    Leader: @Michael Lessard-Clouston

Online Discussion Facilitator and Moderator: @Michael McDougle

    CELEA Liaison: @Michael Westwood

    ACTIVITIES:

The Faith in ELT PLN submits at least one proposal each year for the TESOL convention, developed to align with the interests of those who are interested in exploring how language teaching and learning transcend the physical and mental activities that take place in the classroom. We also host a networking session at the convention and have a regularly monitored discussion board.

    GETTING INVOLVED:

Do you have an interest in the intersection of faith and pedagogy? Are these areas you are interested in discussing or even researching? We would love to hear from you. We also welcome thoughts on panel discussion topics that might be developed for the annual TESOL Convention. Please consider joining the Faith in ELT PLN community in myTESOL. Also, feel free to reach out to me directly: mwestwood12@apu.edu

Thank you for taking the time to learn more about the Faith in ELT PLN!

    Sincerely,
