    Call for Associate Editors for Non-Refereed Articles (2020)

    The MEXTESOL Journal ( is an indexed (Scopus, Latindex), open-access journal that was founded over forty years ago and has been online since 2010. Articles in both English and Spanish are accepted. We consider ourselves to be special among the professional journals available for ELT since we do more than just evaluate articles on their merit for publication. We also dedicate ourselves to helping new writers get the experience they need to be able to publish in the future. Due to this, reviewers mentor authors through a process of feedback and revision.

    In view of recent growth, we are looking for additional volunteer Editors. The positions open at this time are:

    Two or more Associate Editors for Non-Refereed Articles
    Non-Refereed Articles:
    Non-refereed articles usually include reviews, interviews, descriptions of classroom practice or action research which does not involve rigorous research, and any other previously unpublished articles relevant to EFL situations. These include reviews of books and resources. These articles are sent to one reviewer/mentor in blind arbitration.

    General Profile of an Editor (Associate)

    • Is active, organized, responsible, independent, patient, and committed to helping authors become better academic writers.
    • Can preferably work with materials in both English as well as Spanish.
    • Has at least a M.A. in ELT or related areas.


    • Has solid writing skills in English and preferably Spanish.
    • Has teaching experience.
    • Is computer literate (conducting blind review using Microsoft Word).
    • Is proficient in using Google spreadsheets.


    • Is named in every issue of the MEXTESOL Journal.
    • Receives an annual letter of service (constancia).
    • Gets the thanks of our readership.

    Note: These are completely voluntary positions.

    General Duties of all Editors

    • Participate in activities organized by the Editorial Board.
    • Read texts and articles and give opinions about them when asked by the Editor-in-Chief.
    • Work with the other Editors in determining the eligibility of candidates for reviewers or as members of the Editorial Board and help in the selection process.
    • Assist in promoting the MEXTESOL Journal as much as possible.

    General duties of Associate Editors

    Associate Editors' exact duties are to be decided by joint agreement of the Associate Editor and Editor for Non-Refereed Articles. The purpose of the Associate Editors is to support their Editor in all duties and to shadow them so that they could take over if the Editor were temporarily unavailable or resigned.

    Associate Editors for Non-Refereed Articles

    • Receive articles from the Editor for Non-Refereed Articles and acknowledge the receipt of the articles.
    • Select an appropriate reviewer from the database anticipating and avoiding possible conflicts of interest.
    • Constantly update the reviewer database.
    • Ensure fair and timely blind review.
    • Communicate with the authors and their Editor throughout the process, informing them of any important actions taken.
    • Keep records of reviews and comments from reviewers.
    • Send articles to reviewer for evaluation ensuring a balanced workload.
    • Establish deadlines for the review of articles.
    • Evaluate the quality of the reviews and mentor the reviewer whenever necessary.
    • Send the final version of the manuscript to the Editor-in-Chief.
